چکیده
Abstract. Although snow depth on sea ice is a key parameter for thickness (SIT) retrieval, there currently does not exist reliable estimations. In the Arctic, nearly all SIT products use climatology (the modified Warren-99 climatology, W99m) constructed from in situ data obtained prior to first significant impacts of climate change. Antarctic, lack information remains major obstacle development products. this study, we present latest version altimetric (ASD) product computed over both hemispheres difference radar penetration into pack between Ka-band frequency SARAL/Altika and Ku-band CryoSat-2. The ASD solution compared against wide range including model (Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modelling Assimilation System (PIOMAS) or its equivalent Antarctic Global Modeling (GIOMAS), MERCATOR model, NASA's Eulerian Snow On Sea Ice Model (NESOSIM, only Arctic)), Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) passive radiometer data, Dual-altimeter Thickness (DuST) Ka–Ku (only Arctic). further validated Arctic mass balance (IMB) buoys, CryoSat Validation Experiment (CryoVEx) Operation Bridge's (OIB) airborne measurements. These comparisons demonstrate that relevant solution, with spatiotemporal patterns consistent those alternative DuST but mean bias about 6.5 cm. We also validation data: OIB's during period 2014–2018 show correlation 0.66 RMSE 6 Furthermore, first-guess monthly has been product, which shows good agreement OIB 2009–2012. This shown provide better than W99m when data. Finally, have characterised uncertainty due an ensemble solutions by using different previously used comparison product. During 2013–2019, found spatially averaged standard deviation 20 Deviations estimations depths can reach up 77 Using instead estimate time leads reduction average 30

CryoSat-2 estimates of Arctic sea ice thickness and volume
[1] Satellite records show a decline in ice extent over more than three decades, with a record minimum in September 2012. Results from the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modelling and Assimilation system (PIOMAS) suggest that the decline in extent has been accompanied by a decline in volume, but this has not been confirmed by data. Using new data from the European Space Agency CryoSat-2 (CS-2) mission, v...
متن کاملSpatio-temporal Snow Depth Estimates from Time-lapse Photography
Applications using data collected with time-lapse photography provide estimates of snow glide intensities or the spatio-temporal extent of the snow cover. This is established by projecting the image onto a digital elevation model or counting the amount of dark pixels. In this study we identified the point of the shadow created by a mountain peak in an image and calculated the elevation of that ...
متن کاملEvaluation of SNODAS snow depth and snow water equivalent estimates for the Colorado Rocky Mountains, USA
The National Weather Service’s Snow Data Assimilation (SNODAS) program provides daily, gridded estimates of snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), and related snow parameters at a 1-km resolution for the conterminous USA. In this study, SNODAS snow depth and SWE estimates were compared with independent, ground-based snow survey data in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to assess SNODAS accuracy at...
متن کاملThe Benefits of the Ka-Band as Evidenced from the SARAL/AltiKa Altimetric Mission: Scientific Applications
The India–France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applica...
متن کاملIndependent Evaluation of the SNODAS Snow Depth Product Using Regional Scale Lidar-Derived Measurements
Repeated Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveys are quickly becoming the de facto method for measuring spatial variability of montane snowpacks at high resolution. This study examines the potential of a 750 km LiDAR-derived dataset of snow depths, collected during the 2007 northern Colorado Cold Lands Processes Experi5 ment (CLPX-2), as a validation source for an operational hydrologic sno...
